With the holidays fast approaching, you decide to take on the challenge of deep frying a turkey for Thanksgiving. This can be unique and tasty approach to the tradition when done correctly, however we've seen the unfortunate consequences when it does not. To help avoid spoiling your Holiday, consider taking these precautions if you're using a deep fryer.
- Move away from the house if possible. Keep the turkey fryer more than 10 feet away
from your home and away from your children and pets. Never leave it unattended.
- Find flat ground. The oil level should remain even and flowing steadily at all times.
By placing the fryer on a flat surface, you will have a clearer view of the
amount of oil and how it's reacting to the heat.
- Use a thawed, dry turkey. Before you start to fry your Thanksgiving turkey, thaw and dry it. If there is extra water present, the oil will bubble and possibly spill over.
- Monitor the temperature. The lid and handle of the fryer can get quite hot. To help decrease the risk of burns, monitor the oil’s temperature.
- Be prepared. Just as you are prepared with home, auto, and life insurance with Farm Bureau, prepare for accidents by having a fire extinguisher (multipurpose, dry powder) ready at all times.
Beware: Water sinks below oil and quickly spreads the flaming oil, so do not try to extinguish a grease fire with water.
We wish the best for all of our Michigan neighbors and families over the holidays this year. If an accident occurs, remember Farm Bureau Insurance is here to help you through life's unexpected moments by providing quality insurance tailored to you and your family’s needs.
