Insurance 101

Related Information

  • Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist

  • A 2008 Insurance Research Council (IRC) study showed that about 14% of drivers were uninsured. If a driver and/or passengers are injured due to the negligency of an uninsured or underinsured driver, they may seek compensation for injuries and damages through the uninsured motorist (UM) and underinsured motorist (UIM) portions of  their policy.

    • Uninsured Motorist coverage pays for your injuries when someone without car insurance causes an accident or when you're hit by a hit-and-run driver.
    • Underinsured Motorist coverage kicks in when someone else causes an accident but doesn't have enough insurance to cover all your costs. Both UM/UIM also pay for lost wages if you have to stay home from work due to your injury.
